How does physical activity help if you have hypertension? | o2blog

WHAT IS It?

Blood is pumped around the body by the heart. It is circulated through vessels known as arteries, and smaller vessels known as capillaries. When the heart contracts to force blood into these vessels, your blood pressure increases. This is why your blood pressure measurement is made up of figures, the pressure during contraction and the pressure during relaxation. High blood pressure is also known as hypertension.

WHAT CAUSES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?

In a few cases there is a specific reason for high blood pressure. For example if your kidneys or adrenal glands are not working correctly. However most of the time there is no specific reason or cause for high blood pressure. There are some causes you may not be able to influence, for example having a family history of high blood pressure or being of non-white origin. However there are many causes to do with your lifestyle that you can change to reduce your risk of having high blood pressure, or reducing your pressure if it is already too high. These include being over weight, eating too much salt and cholesterol, drinking too much alcohol, being physically inactive and not eating enough fruit and vegetables.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

If you suffer from high blood pressure then you have an increased risk of suffering from heart disease, stroke and heart failure. Prolonged high blood pressure causes damage to your blood vessels which can lead to the vessels becoming narrowed. This increases the likelihood of the vessels becoming blocked and can cause damage to heart or brain. The higher your blood pressure, the higher the risk of heart disease so any changes you can make to reduce your blood pressure will help to reduce this risk.

HOW DOES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HELP?

  • Your blood pressure measurement is made up of two numbers ? for example 140/85mmHg. First number is the pressure during heartbeats (systolic pressure), and the second is the pressure between heartbeats (diastolic pressure). regular physical activity can lower systolic pressure by 10mmHg, and diastolic by 8mmHg.
  • People usually get the biggest reduction in blood pressure within the first 10 weeks of activity. But you need to remain active to maintain the benefits.
  • increasing your level of activity helps speed your metabolism. This helps you to burn more calories and, as long as you don?t eat more to compensate for this, you will lose weight.
  • Physical activity helps reduce other risk factors for heart disease such as high blood cholesterol levels, developing diabetes and the risk of having a stroke.
  • Physical activity, along with healthy diet, helps reduce stress and improves your overall feeling of well-being and quality of life, and helps you to sleep well.
  • It is also reduces the risk of bowel cancer, osteoporosis and the risk of falling.

Why Landmark Forum Is a Worthwhile Experience

Landmark education is one of the most amazing personal development programs you will ever come across. Since its inception, a number of people have participated in Landmark forum and there has been very excellent feedback from almost all participants of the Landmark forum. This feedback has proved the authenticity of Landmark education in spite of criticism from time to time. The seminars that are offered at Landmark education are beneficial for everyone who takes part, adding value to their personal and corporate lives. It does not matter the cultural background, value of this education fits into every specific context; little wonder the program has gained lots of popularity in many countries across the world.

If there is one thing that people want, it is a practical approach in dealing with the issues that they face in their lives. There are a lot of personal development programs that look very juicy and attractive but do not offer any practical help to seekers and leaves them still searching for a solution. The last thing you want is to get a lot of theories with no specific practical steps to apply directly to your life. The gist of Landmark education is the practical approach of the seminars and the sessions in general. In an important step towards more practical quantum information processing, researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the University of California, San Diego; and the Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy, have demonstrated the first heralded single photon source made from silicon. This source complements two other recently developed silicon-based technologiesinterferometers for manipulating the entanglement of photons and single photon detectorsneeded to build a quantum optical circuit or a secure quantum communication system.

The line between "interesting" and practical in advanced electronics and optics often comes down to making the new device compatible with existing technology. According to NIST scientist Kartik Srinivasan, the new 0.5 mm x 0.05 mm-sized heralded photon generator meshes with existing technology in three important ways: it operates at room temperature; it produces photons compatible with existing telecommunications systems (wavelengths of about 1550 nanometers); and it's in silicon, and so can be built using standard, scalable fabrication techniques.

A "heralded" photon is one of a pair whose existence is announced by the detection of its partnerthe "herald" photon. To get heralded single photons, the group built upon a technique previously demonstrated in silicon called photon pair generation.

In photon pair generation, a laser pumps photons into a material whose properties cause two incoming pump photons to spontaneously generate a new pair of frequency-shifted photons. However, while these new photons emerge at precisely the same time, it is impossible to know when that will occur.

"Detecting one of these photons, therefore, lets us know to look for its partner," says Srinivasan. "While there are a number of applications for photon pairs, heralded pairs will sometimes be needed, for example, to trigger the storage of information in future quantum-based computer memories."

According to Srinivasan, the group's silicon-based device efficiently produced pairs of single photons, and their experiment clearly demonstrated they could herald the presence of one photon by the detection of the other.

While the new device is a step forward, it is not yet practical, according to co-author Professor Shayan Mookherjea at UC San Diego, because a single source is not bright enough and a number of other required functions need to be integrated onto the chip. However, putting multiple sources along with their complementary components onto a single chipsomething made possible by using silicon-based technologycould supply the performance needed for practical applications.

The work was among the three finalists and received an honorable mention in the Maiman Student Paper Competition.

Good news for aging eyes: Debilitating eyesight problems on the decline for older Americans

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Today's senior citizens are reporting fewer visual impairment problems than their counterparts from a generation ago, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study. Improved techniques for cataract surgery and a reduction in the prevalence of macular degeneration may be the driving forces behind this change, the researchers said.

"From 1984 until 2010, the decrease in visual impairment in those 65 and older was highly statistically significant," said Angelo P. Tanna, M.D., first author of the study. "There was little change in visual impairments in adults under the age of 65."

The study, published in the journal Ophthalmology, shows that in 1984, 23 percent of elderly adults had difficulty reading or seeing newspaper print because of poor eyesight. By 2010, there was an age-adjusted 58 percent decrease in this kind of visual impairment, with only 9.7 percent of elderly reporting the problem.

There was also a substantial decline in eyesight problems that limited elderly Americans from taking part in daily activities, such as bathing, dressing or getting around inside or outside of the home, according to the study.

"The findings are exciting, because they suggest that currently used diagnostic and screening tools and therapeutic interventions for various ophthalmic diseases are helping to prolong the vision of elderly Americans," Tanna said.

Tanna is the vice chairman of ophthalmology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and an attending physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Stephen Kaye, of the Institute for Health & Aging and Disability Statistics Center, University of California, is the second author of the study.

The study used self-reported data collected from 1984 to 2010 through two major population-based surveys, the National Health Interview Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation.

Survey questions revealed how vision problems can impact the daily activities and quality of life of Americans and helped researchers analyze trends in the prevalence of visual impairment of adults in the United States.

While this study didn't identify any of the causes of the change in the prevalence of visual impairment, Tanna said there are three likely reasons for the decline:

  • Improved techniques and outcomes for cataract surgery
  • Less smoking, resulting in a drop in the prevalence of macular degeneration
  • Treatments for diabetic eye diseases are more readily available and improved, despite the fact that the prevalence of diabetes has increased

Future studies should identify which treatment strategies help prevent vision in older adults and then make those treatments available to as many people as possible, Tanna said.

Google Nexus 7 developed in just 4 months, sold essentially at cost price

Android Central

So, the Google Nexus 7 is the hot ticket right about now. And so it should be. Despite the substantial leaks and rumors leading up to yesterdays announcement -- including the accidental posting of that ?video, it still blew the doors off when Hugo Barra officially unveiled it duriong the day 1 keynote at Google I/O. A stock Google tablet, running the latest version of Android, sold cheaply, and directly from Google. It's almost too good to be true, but, how did the Nexus 7 come about? In short, pretty quickly.

Andy Rubin, and Asus Chairman, Jonney Shih, have been speaking to ?AllThingsD ?about the origins of the Nexus 7. Google provided Asus with the challenge -- build a high end tablet, that could sell at $200, and they had just 4 months to get it done.

Shih also sent members of his team to work at Mountain View, so as to put them closer to Google, and to have a 24 hour development cycle. While it seems as though Asus may just have pulled off mission impossible, Rubin has heaped the praise onto the Taiwanese OEM.

He said that I don’t think there would have been any other partner that could move that fast.,” and that “we went from zero to working product in four months.” Whichever way you look at it, 4 months to release a completely new product from scratch, running a completely new version of Android, is pretty darn impressive. Hats off, to Asus.

Rubin also acknowledges the lack of a content ecosystem, has played a big part in the, thus far, poor uptake of Android tablets. With the release of a $200 tablet, and the additional content announced for Google Play, Google have themselves a device that could compete on a level playing field with the Amazon Kindle Fire. And, a high-end device at that.

And then comes the money. In getting a high end device out at a rock bottom price, the Nexus 7 will be sold with next to no margins. Being sold through the Play Store, Google also absorbs all the marketing costs of the Nexus 7. One of the big questions on every ones lips now is, what will this do to the Android tablet market as a whole?

Merkel buries euro bonds as summit tension rises

BERLIN/PARIS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel sought to bury once and for all the idea of common euro zone bonds on Tuesday, saying Europe would not share total debt liability "as long as I live", as the bloc's big four finance ministers met to narrow differences on how to solve a worsening debt crisis.

Two days before a crucial European Union summit, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy released a seven-page report on closer fiscal and banking union envisaging a euro zone treasury that would issue common debt in the medium term.

Merkel immediately stamped on the idea of mutualising debt - favored by France, Italy and Spain - at a meeting of lawmakers from her Free Democratic coalition partners in Berlin, according to people who attended the closed-door session.

"I don't see total debt liability as long as I live," she was quoted as saying, a day after branding the idea of euro bonds "economically wrong and counterproductive".

However Germany, the EU's biggest economy and paymaster, appeared ready to budge on using the euro zone's rescue funds more flexibly to help banks and reassure investors spooked by an increased risk of facing write-downs on government bonds.

The parties in Merkel's centre-right coalition proposed allowing a new permanent rescue fund, known as the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to funnel aid directly to national bank rescue funds, according to a draft seen by Reuters.

That could spare governments like Spain's some of the political stigma of a bailout, although the loans would still be on the state's balance sheet, increasing its debt, and would still be subject to strict conditions.

More significantly, conservative floor leader Volker Kauder told another meeting of lawmakers that euro zone governments were discussing making it possible to remove preferred creditor status from the ESM rescue fund, participants said.

Neither Merkel nor Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, who insisted on that treaty clause to make private bondholders take first losses in any future debt restructuring by bailed-out states, spoke out in favor of such a move, the sources said.

The provision has scared investors off buying Spanish debt since Madrid was promised a bailout of up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) for its debt-stricken banks, since they fear a possible "haircut", driving bond yields up to alarm levels.

TENSIONS

Political tensions were already rising before word emerged of Merkel's dismissive comments.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti told parliament he would not just rubber stamp conclusions of the EU summit on Thursday and Friday and was ready to go on negotiating into Sunday evening if necessary to agree on measures to calm markets.

Cyprus, which on Monday became the fifth euro zone member to request a bailout, suffered a blow to its pride when the European Central Bank announced it would no longer accept the country's bonds as collateral - less than a week before Nicosia is due to assume the rotating EU presidency.

Euro zone finance ministers will hold a conference call on the Spanish and Cypriot aid requests on Wednesday, EU officials said.

Before that, finance ministers of the four biggest economies - Germany, France, Italy and Spain - were to discuss in Paris on Tuesday evening short-term crisis management and the proposals for closer long-term budgetary and banking integration.

Financial markets are on edge and international pressure for decisive action is rising but the summit, the 20th since the bloc's debt problems began in early 2010, is not expected to produce a lasting solution.

The finance ministers' session in Paris was called at such short notice - in an apparent rush to repair damage from a public rift between Merkel and leaders of the other three states when they met in Rome last Friday - that one finance minister's press staff only learned of the invitation on Tuesday morning.

The four finance chiefs were expected to seek more common ground before Merkel and French President Francois Hollande hold a pre-summit meeting on Wednesday.

HALF ITS ECONOMY

Cyprus, the 17-nation currency area's third smallest economy with just 1 million residents, added drama to a fraught week by applying for rescue loans on Monday.

Two euro zone sources said the East Mediterranean island, with an outsize financial sector heavily exposed to neighboring Greece, may need up to 10 billion euros in emergency financing, more than half its 17.3 billion euro annual output and equating to 10,000 euros per Cypriot.

While the sum is easily within the range of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) bailout fund, it sets an awkward precedent and may lead to demands for private bondholders to take a write-down as they did in Greece.

Cyprus needs to plug a 1.8 billion euro capital shortfall in its second largest lender by June 30. Potential aid could be more comprehensive to cover fiscal requirements, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly told Reuters.

Nicosia takes over the EU presidency for six months on July 1. But in Frankfurt, an ECB spokesman said that a downgrade of the Cyprus credit rating into speculative grade territory by all accepted rating agencies meant that Cypriot government securities no longer fulfilled the creditworthiness requirement.

This means banks cannot offer Cyprus government bonds in return for cash loans from the ECB.

Nicosia is believed to have applied to the EU for aid after exhausting attempts to secure loans from either China or Russia, a close ally, in an apparent effort to avoid the tough conditions and intrusive monitoring of an EU/IMF program.

"The exact number has not been decided yet. It was to be 6 billion for the state financing and 2 billion for the banks but that is optimistic - it is more likely to be seven and three - up to 10 billion euros in total," one euro zone official said.

On Monday, Spain formally requested up to 100 billion euros in rescue loans to recapitalize a banking sector that is weighed down by bad loans from a burst real estate bubble.

It is seeking to avoid the political humiliation and partial loss of sovereignty involved in a full state bailout program of the kind granted to Greece, Ireland and Portugal, even though the IMF and EU authorities will still have to monitor the aid.

Spanish and Italian bond yields rose again on Tuesday as skepticism set in before the EU summit. Spain had to pay the highest yields since last November to sell 3.08 billion euros in short-term debt as demand from its ailing banks dwindled.

CONTAGION

Investors want to see bold moves to underpin the European currency union and halt the inexorable contagion from one debt-stricken country to another. But with 27 EU countries and 17 in the euro zone, quick steps are one thing Europe can't take.

The Brussels summit is expected to agree on a growth package pushed by France worth around 130 billion euros ($162 billion) in infrastructure project bonds, reallocated regional aid funds and European Investment Bank loans.

Leaders will also discuss proposals for a banking union but while they are likely to agree to give the ECB power to supervise big cross-border banks, Merkel is resisting any joint deposit guarantee or common bank resolution fund.

In Washington, U.S. Treasury Under Secretary Lael Brainard, who has been handling financial diplomacy with Europe, urged EU leaders to put "more flesh on the bones" of their plans for tackling the debt crisis at this week's summit.

Menswear designers favor summer coats despite heat

MILAN (AP) ? In a muggy, scorching Milan, it's hard to imagine a summer of lightweight coats and leather jackets.

That's the look, however, that designers are forecasting for the summer of 2013 after three days of preview presentations on the Milan runway.

From Ferragamo to Prada, from Jil Sander to Gucci, almost every label has its version of the non-belted raincoat, once a must for a rainy day in the 1960's.

The vintage leather jacket ? from blazer to bomber to wind breaker and crafted out of super soft leather and suede ? also makes a comeback for next summer.

Designers have also made men happy with the introduction of open-necked shirts for the warmer months. Mostly in white, these shirts come in crisp cotton and have a wide collar, unbuttoned just below the neck. Cool and comfortable, they easily pass the without-a-tie elegance test.

For the stuffier crowd, a few designers showed the shirts with ties worn under a see-through pullover, another popular item this season.

From the very start one message has come across bright and clear: next summer is all about color.

The Milan shows end Tuesday with Giorgio Armani's signature collection.

___

GUCCI

Creative director Frida Giannini has brought a whole lot of Mediterranean pizazz to Gucci.

It was no easy task following in the footsteps of American superstar Tom Ford, who turned the once-staid company into one of the sexiest labels in fashion before leaving in 2004. But the Rome-born Giannini decided to see fashion her own way ? and that was somewhere between "La Dolce Vita" and the Mediterranean seaside, with a bit of Anglo-American rock thrown in.

The result has been highly successful. And her latest menswear collection Monday for the summer of 2013 was no exception.

Next summer's Gucci palette is a burst of Mediterranean energy from sea blue and green to turquoise, terracotta, raspberry, orange, lemon and pistachio. These bright colors can be used for a suit, a pair of pants or a sweater. When mixed together, they create cheerful prints for silk shirts and slacks.

The new Gucci blazer in cotton jersey is double breasted and fitted around the waist, creating the slim effect favored by 1960s "Dolce Vita" playboys. Trousers are classic but on the skinny side. Loosely knit pullovers, net-stitched polo shirts and printed foulard shirts add casual chic. Summer raincoats, a popular look on the current Milan runway, also come in bright shades.

The latest Gucci bag is roomy and colorful. Styles range from the canvas shoulder bag to the crocodile weekend bag.

The leitmotif of the warm weather collection is the classic Gucci loafer.

___

EMPORIO ARMANI

Giorgio Armani's Emporio menswear collection was elegant, classy and focused on single theme: a simple pair of summer shorts.

For his second-line summer 2013 collection, which was presented Monday, Armani paired cuffed shorts with single or double breasted jackets to create a spiffy warm weather blazer-and-pants effect. At times, the designer added a white shirt and tie ? complete with tie pin ? for extra sophistication.

Armani also paired his shorts with lightweight trench coats, soft leather jackets and see-through pullovers. He used new technical procedures to turn classic tweeds into super-light summer look-alikes. Colors belonged to the traditional Armani palette: gray, beige, brown and blue, with military green being a new entry.

Footwear came in extra sturdy leather running shoes, which doubled for classic lace-ups. Big bags were carried by hand with a shoulder strap option. Armani also offered a small iPad carrier, a very popular item this round.

At the end of the show Armani sent out a parade of male and female models dressed in swimsuits, with a huge photo of the Olympic circles in the runway's backdrop.

Armani is the official designer of the Italian team's uniforms for the London Olympics.

___

MISSONI

The Missoni summer man likes to travel in style and comfort. He wears a safari suit complete with matching hat, carries a large patterned bag and sports Missoni-patterned desert boots.

The models at the Missoni menswear show for the summer of 2013 presented Monday walked down a colored sandy runway worked into a Missoni pattern to underline the vacation mood of the collection.

The safari suit came with Bermuda shorts ? popular this round of menswear ? or casual trousers cuffed at the ankle. If he prefers, the Missoni man can don patterned sneakers instead of desert boots. Blazers and bomber jackets, also big items for next year's warmer weather, completed the Missoni summer suitcase.

Colors for next summer, which in general promise to be particularly bright, started at Missoni with sandy beige, dark olive and ink blue, and then burst out into poppy red, saffron yellow and emerald green.

In the knit department, designer Angela Missoni offered a series of pullovers and cardigans, which like most Missoni knitwear never goes out of style.

Louis C.K. on Sarah Palin Tweets: Not Sorry!

Louis C.K. is far from apologetic about the profane Sarah Palin Tweets that caused major controversy and cost him his White House Correspondents' Dinner gig.

The Louis star was slated to host the annual D.C. event but bowed out amid the uproar sparked by harsh Tweets he wrote about the ex-Alaska Governor.

"It's caused me some problems that I wrote s--t about her," C.K. admitted on the Today show Monday. "But I also... why not, man? I mean, what is she?"

"She's just a person. I don't think she's some sacred person."

"And, to me," he added of his Tweets, which were written drunk on a plane, "I was writing poems. It was like poetry to me, and I enjoyed writing them."

Poetry comprised of C-bombs, F-bombs and Sarah Palin jokes.

Asked if he would write the same things again, C.K. replied:

"Yeah, I probably would, I think so. It still makes me laugh a little bit, the stuff that I wrote, when I think about it ... I actually thought it was well-written."

Hey, might as well own it. The man does not mince words.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Parents Blamed For Childhood Obesity

June 25th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Top News?..

Findings of two new studies might send shock waves to American parents as the studies have blamed parents for making kids obese. According to the studies, negligence of parents on the physical activities of children might have resulted into growing incidences of obesity.

The findings of the studies have been published in the journal Early Child Development and Care reports. The journal has reported that parents who spend less time with their children are cause of the growing cases of obesity. It has been found that in the absence of parents, children spend more time in watching TV and in playing video games.

The co-author of the studies, David Schary, said, ?Across all parenting styles, we saw anywhere from four to five hours a day of sedentary activity?. The sedentary lifestyle has been linked to obesity. Sedentary lifestyle makes people lazy, which ultimately lead to obesity.

Tips For Car Insurance Search | After All Auto

Finding a good auto insurance policy is something that every car owner is looking for nowadays. Everyone wants to look for ways to cut down on costs and car insurance is one expense that eats up a big chunk of the budget every month. Finding one that is affordable but dependable is really important.

Car insurance premium is something that a lot of people dread. It?s pretty expensive. If only there?s a way to just do away with it. But it?s a requirement by the state and it serves a good purpose.

Insurance is not merely for compliance of legal requirements in car registration. It serves as a form of security to those who are exposed to the dangers of the road. Car insurance is really important especially for emergencies and unexpected accidents that you might meet while driving. Having car insurance rids you of worrying about expenses.

Because auto insurance is important and you cannot do away without it, the best thing to do is to try and cut its cost. The following are some tips on how you can save with your car insurance premiums:

1. Keep a clean driving record- being accident prone on the road increases the like hood that it will happen again. The higher risk also makes the premium higher. Always drive safely and defensively.

2. Install safety devices-installing additional safety devices in your vehicle can really help lower the premium of your insurance because less damage is made in case of accidents.

3. Keep it safe and simple-buying luxury cars would mean paying higher premium. If you want to lower it, then you should opt for simple cars that have all the safety features you?ll need.

4. Choose your provider-the most important thing you have to do to cut down insurance costs is to pick the right one. It would be pointless if you?re paying less but then you cannot claim because it?s a bogus company. You better check on auto insurance reviews for guidance.

Rio+20 earth summit: Why Hillary Clinton won applause for statement on women

The UN's Rio+20 earth summit set only modest goals, but sparked controversy over the Vatican's successful effort to remove reference to 'reproductive rights' from the final document. Hillary Clinton vowed the US would ensure 'those rights are respected.'

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, left, and Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard share a laugh during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Friday.

The United Nations? global summit on sustainable development concluded in Rio de Janeiro Friday with only modest and nonbinding goals, and in the eyes of some critics it even took a giant step backwards ? by eliminating from its final document any reference to women?s ?reproductive rights? of the kind that has figured in similar summits? statements for the past two decades.

The Rio+20 summit ? so named because it took place 20 years after the landmark Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit of 1992 ? underwhelmed leaders and private-sector participants alike for its lack of bold initiatives and landmark treaties, such as the biodiversity and greenhouse-gas initiatives that came out of the first Rio summit.

But Rio+20 nevertheless generated controversy over the successful campaign by the Vatican and developing countries to eliminate any reference to reproductive rights from the summit?s final text.

The document still advocates universal access to family planning and the integration of reproductive health into national development strategies. But a reference to reproductive rights ? language similar to wording that has long been included in development and women-advancement summits? statements ? was stricken, while the Vatican prevailed in its opposition to a phrase that called ?access to reproductive health services? an important element of women?s empowerment.

Numerous world summits have called on governments to recognize the role that reproductive health plays in advancing women?s health and economic well-being since a 1994 Cairo summit on population and development declared for the first time that women?s human rights include reproductive rights.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who attended the summit?s closing session Friday, seemed to chide global leaders over the retreat on women?s rights as she underscored the US commitment to ?reproductive rights.? Clinton received enthusiastic applause when she said, ?Women must be empowered to make decisions about whether and when to have children,? and then added that the US ?will continue to work to ensure that those rights are respected in international agreements.?

Several prominent advocates of women?s rights criticized the summit?s final document and its vague or absent wording on gender issues. Gro Harlem Brundtland, a former Norwegian prime minister and a member of The Elders, a group of global statesmen formed by Nelson Mandela in 2007, called the wording ?a step backwards from previous agreements.?

A group of human rights advocacy organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the Center for International Environmental Law, issued a statement citing Rio?s ?worryingly minimal commitments? as evidence that ?global economic troubles are being matched by a recession in human rights.?

In addition to the reproductive rights omission, the organizations said the summit fell short on issues of corporate accountability. They pointed specifically to a successful effort ? this one backed by the US ? to delete a reference reaffirming the responsibility of business to respect universal human rights.

In her speech, Secretary Clinton focused on what she called a remarkable evolution in thinking about and carrying out sustainable development, a change she said has included a broadening of the actors leading on development from governments and international institutions to include private players ? such as business.

Citing what she called the growing ?power of the market? in spreading development and raising millions of people out of poverty, Clinton noted that the official development assistance share of total capital flows into developing countries has tumbled from 70 percent in the 1960s to only 13 percent today.

With that shift in investment in developing countries to a predominant role for business and nongovernmental organizations has come new ways of thinking, she said.

Saying ?the most compelling products of this conference are the examples of new thinking that can lead to models for future action,? Clinton then cited one of America?s, and the world?s, most visionary entrepreneurs of the 21st century. ?It should be said of Rio,? she said, ?that people left here thinking, as the late Steve Jobs put it, not just big, but different.??

US mulls operating out of Vietnam War era military bases to counter growing Chinese military might Report

Macau News.net Saturday 23rd June, 2012

As the administration of US President Barack Obama revamps its Asian strategy in response to China's rising army strength, the U.S. military is eyeing a return to some old bases in the South East Asian region, including those used during the Vietnam War.

In recent weeks, the Pentagon has intensified discussions with Thailand about creating a regional disaster-relief hub at an American-built airfield that housed B-52 bombers during the 1960s and 1970s, while U.S. officials said they are also interested in more naval visits to Thai ports and joint surveillance flights to monitor trade routes and military movements.

According to The Washington Post, the Pentagon is also seeking greater accommodations in the Philippines, including at the Subic Bay naval base and the former Clark Air Base, which were once the largest U.S. military installations in Asia as well as key repair and supply hubs during the Vietnam War.

Amid concerns about China's growing military power and its claims to disputed territories, Pentagon leaders have flocked to the region to speed up negotiations and fortify relations while Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines have cautiously put out the welcome mat for the Americans again, the paper said.

However, U.S. officials said they have no desire to re-occupy any of the massive Southeast Asian bases from last century, nor do they have the money to create new ones and are just looking for permission to operate from the old installations as 'guests', mostly on a temporary basis, it added.

"I don't carry around a backpack with American flags and run around the world planting them. We want to be out there partnered with nations and have a rotational presence that would allow us to build up common capabilities for common interests," Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff clarified. (ANI)

How To Get Cash For Structured Settlements

When you are considering getting cash for structured settlements, there are a few important issues to consider. While the process may seem complicated, getting professional advice with the legal issues will make it much easier. Nevertheless, you still have to do your own due diligence and be certain that you are getting good advice and will be paid the appropriate cash payment for your annuity.

Hire an experienced legal advisor

You can ask some of your present legal contacts or search online to get the names of advisors with experience in working out arrangements for cash for structured settlements. After the initial contact, request references from previous customers and review their professional credentials. A good legal professional will be able to find possible buyers for your structured settlement, explain the contract terms-especially the small print, and help you determine which offer is the best deal.

Know your rights

Most states have laws that allow the sale of all or part of the payments from a structured settlement. Check the laws in your states to be sure it is permitted. This is another area that your advisor should know the about the particular conditions in your state.

Be sure you are dealing with a reputable buyer

Unfortunately, any transaction that involves money brings a lot of unscrupulous operators who are only interested in stealing your money. Carefully investigate the buying company and get comparisons of rate before making a decision. Check with your local Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints. Find references for the company and its owners and especially find out how long they have been in business. Selecting a company to handle your cash for structured settlement deal is extremely important and every effort must be made to be sure you are working with legitimate and honest people.

Why do you need cash from your structured settlement?

Be sure you are clear why you need the cash and how much cash you actually need. You do not have to sell all of your future payments; you can sell only as many payments as needed to generate the amount of cash you want. Determine how much effect the discounting of the future payments will have on your total financial plan. While getting the cash now may solve the immediate cash problem, you want to be sure that you are leaving enough payments to pay for your living or medical expenses in the future.

The Procedure

Negotiating a contract to receive cash for an annuity is not a quick process; be prepared to take 60-90 days to complete the transaction.

Educate yourself by talking to other people who have done the same thing and meet with several advisors. The more you learn about the process, the more comfortable and sure you will be that you are being treated fairly. Don't be in a hurry to get started with the first company you meet.

POCHEON, South Korea (AP) ? A huge North Korean flag disappeared behind a tower of flames and thick black smoke Friday as South Korean fighter jets and U.S. attack helicopters fired rockets in the allies' biggest joint live-fire drills since the Korean War.

The war games south of the heavily armed Korean border come amid rising animosity between the rival Koreas and are meant to mark Monday's 62nd anniversary of the start of the 1950-53 war, which ended in a truce, leaving the Korean peninsula still technically at war.

Live-fire drills by the allies are fairly routine, but using the North's national flag as part of target practice is unusual ? and will be seen as a provocation by Pyongyang, which has previously threatened war for what it called South Korean insults to the country's national symbols and leadership.

Still, an immediate North Korean military response is unlikely. The rockets didn't hit the flag, which an analyst said might lead to a less angry North Korean response. But even a direct attack on the flag would probably only result in escalated North Korean threats because Pyongyang's struggling economy prevents it from staging any attack that could cause a war, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea professor at Seoul's Dongguk University.

The one-day drills, involving 2,000 troops from both countries, are intended to send a clear warning against North Korea aggression by showing U.S. and South Korean combat readiness, South Korea's Defense Ministry said in a statement. Officials have repeatedly described these as the biggest ever joint drills. They coincide with several days of joint naval exercises involving a nuclear-powered U.S. supercarrier and separate U.S., South Korean and Japanese naval rescue drills.

South Korean defense officials declined to comment on Pyongyang's possible reaction to the allies using the North Korean flag in the drills. A U.S. military spokesman didn't immediately comment.

North Korea's state media have condemned the ongoing drills as a precursor to an invasion, with the Korean Central News Agency warning that even a small clash could lead to a "full-scale regional nuclear war."

Tension has been rising since a North Korean rocket launch in April that Seoul and Washington called a cover for a test of banned long-range missile technology. North Korea said the launch, which happened during celebrations of the centennial of late national founder Kim Il Sung's birth, was meant to send a satellite into orbit; the rocket broke apart shortly after liftoff.

The U.N. Security Council condemned the launch, and Pyongyang has since made a series of threats against Seoul's conservative government and media, threatening to attack unless it got an apology for perceived insults against the country and its new, young leader, Kim Jong Un.

Thousands of civilians and officials ? including South Korea's prime minister ? watched Friday's drills. The United States, which has 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea, deployed Apache helicopters, A-10 Thunderbolts and armored vehicles for the drills, Seoul's Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Kim Jong Un took power as supreme leader of North Korea and its 1.2 million troops after his father, longtime ruler Kim Jong Il, died in December.

North Korea has condemned what it calls Seoul's insensitivity to Kim Jong Il's death and South Korean media criticism of important national events in the North. In recent months, North Korea has ramped up harsh rhetoric against South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who ended Seoul's no-strings-attached aid to Pyongyang after he took office in 2008, with posters and slogans that refer to Lee as a "rat."

North Korea has also "drastically" increased fighter jet drills near the border with South Korea in the first half of this year, a South Korean Defense Ministry official said, declining to be named because of office rules. The official wouldn't provide further details.

On Thursday, the navies of the United States, South Korea and Japan began two-day annual search and rescue exercises near the southern South Korean island of Jeju. Starting Saturday, the United States and South Korea planned three-day naval exercises off South Korea's west coast that include the U.S. aircraft carrier USS George Washington.
