Smith almost perfect, 49ers flatten Arizona 24-3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Three touchdown passes, one incomplete pass.

Not a bad night for Alex Smith, and it could have been better, considering that the one incomplete pass was dropped by a wide-open receiver.

The San Francisco quarterback completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns ? two to Michael Crabtree and one to Randy Moss ? to help San Francisco flatten the Arizona Cardinals 24-3 on Monday night.

"Eighteen of 19, I have never seen that," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "How important for your quarterback to play very well? It is very important and I don't know how you play much better. It was a fantastic game by him."

Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett could hardly believe what Smith had done.

"Everyone's surprised. My 5-year-old son's surprised," Dockett said, "but at the end of the day it wasn't like he had to make the long perfect throws. He had some guys open and we missed some tackles and they made plays."

Smith said he had no idea his stats were that good.

"Which is a good thing," he said. "I don't want to think about my stats or incompletions or anything like that. I was kind of in a good rhythm, the whole offense was. "

Smith has withstood more than his share of criticism he was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft in 2005. He was not interested in calling this a statement performance.

"At this point I don't care," he said. "if you ask me a few years ago, yeah maybe, but at this point I don't really care. I am concerned about winning. The guys in the locker room know what I am about and that is what really matters."

As for reports he had lost his confidence, Smith said, "It was in my closet. I found it."

Smith was 14 of 15 for 146 yards and two touchdowns, both to Crabtree, as the 49ers built a 17-0 halftime lead.

Moss caught a 47-yard TD pass, dodging tacklers down the sideline on a play that seemed to turn back the clock to the receiver's prime. With the catch, he tied Terrell Owens for fourth on the NFL career touchdown list with 156.

Smith, who tied a career high with the three touchdown passes, spread out his completions to 10 receivers. Crabtree led the way with five catches for 72 yards.

Arizona's defense, supposed to be the team's strength, missed tackle after tackle in an embarrassing nationally televised performance at home. The 24 points were the most allowed by the Cardinals this season.

"This was a big test for us, and everyone saw how it went," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "It was disappointing to say the least."

Quarterback John Skelton called the loss "embarrassing" and "humiliating."

Led by Smith's near-perfect precision passing, the 49ers methodically dominated from the start. He had the best completion percentage of his career, and he would have been perfect had Delanie Walker not dropped the ball when he was wide open on a crossing route in the first half.

A 10-play, 77-yard drive that consumed just over 6 minutes of the first quarter put San Francisco up 7-0. On third-and-goal from the 3, Smith threw a sidelines pass to Crabtree, who outfought Patrick Peterson for the ball and the touchdown.

A flurry missed tackles, most notably an open-field whiff by Sam Acho, helped Ted Ginn Jr. return a punt 35 yards to the Arizona 45 in the second quarter. Daryl Washington sacked Smith to help set up a third-and-23 from the Arizona 46. But Smith found Crabtree over the middle for 22 yards, just a yard shy of the first down. David Akers' 43 yard field goal made it 10-0 with 5:58 left in the half.

Crabtree beat Peterson again for San Francisco's second touchdown. Smith threw over the middle to the receiver, who caught the ball, then fooled Peterson with an inside move into the end zone to make it 17-0 with 1:41 left in the half. The 49ers drove 68 yards in eight plays, again overcoming a sack, this one by Calais Campbell, that made it second-and-goal from the 16. Smith threw 7 yards to Mario Manningham to set up the TD toss to Crabtree.

The Cardinals were booed off the field by the home crowd at the half.

Things didn't get any better for the home team in the third quarter. On third-and-9, Smith threw 30 yards to Crabtree, who evaded a host of tacklers. Then on third-and-8, Smith tossed a short pass to Moss, who sidestepped a series of would-be defenders all the way to the end zone, putting San Francisco ahead 24-0 with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

The Cardinals averted a shutout with Jay Feely's 28-yard field goal

John Skelton, making his second start since Kevin Kolb went down with rib injuries, completed 32 of 52 passes for 290 yards, often overthrowing receivers. The Cardinals rushed for just 7 yards in nine attempts against the 49ers, who entered the game as the No. 1-ranked defense in the NFL, No. 2 against the run.

Arizona's final possession ended when Larry Fitzgerald was stopped at the 1.

Notes: The roof was open at University of Phoenix Stadium, a rarity for Cardinals games. ... San Francisco C Daniel Kilgore left the game in the first quarter with a concussion. ... Washington had two sacks, giving him eight for the season. ... In its two nationally televised night appearances this season, against St. Louis on a Thursday and San Francisco on Monday, Arizona was outscored 41-6. ... The 49ers improved to 3-1 on the road, winning their last two away from home by a combined 55-3. ... Only Jerry Rice (208), Emmitt Smith (175) and LaDainian Tomlinson (162) have more touchdowns than Moss. ... Justin Smith had two of San Francisco's four sacks. ... The 49ers have a bye this week. The Cardinals are at Green Bay on Sunday.

iPad Mini Beats Surface to the Launch

Apple has announced a special press event for October 23 -- three days before Microsoft's impending launch of Windows 8 and the Surface tablet. It's widely believed that Cupertino will launch the much-anticipated iPad mini on that date. An iPad mini "will definitely be disruptive to the 7-inch media tablet space," said Rhoda Alexander, a research director at IHS iSuppli.

Chevy says 2014 Corvette will debut in January

DETROIT (Reuters) - An all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, the seventh generation of the uniquely American sports car in six decades, will make its debut January 13 on the eve of the North American International Auto Show, General Motors' Chevrolet brand said on Thursday.

Eagerly awaited by auto enthusiasts, the new Corvette - dubbed C7 by the faithful but known to GM and its suppliers by the development code Y1XX - is widely expected to have a radically restyled exterior, a more upscale interior, a lighter chassis, and a more efficient engine and transmission.

There will be a 6-month gap between the 2014 Corvette new C7 and the current C6 version, a Chevrolet spokesman said in an email. GM will stop building the 2013 model in early February, and is due to start producing the 2014 model in volume in July.

The first of the new C7 Corvettes is expected to roll off the line in Bowling Green on June 30 - 60 years to the day that the first 1953 model was produced, according to two suppliers familiar with the automaker's plans but are not authorized to speak on behalf of GM.

The C7's formal unveiling in mid-January also marks the anniversary of the Corvette's debut in January 1953 as a GM Motorama "dream car" concept in New York. Since then, GM has built and sold more than 1.5 million Corvettes, although annual sales have slowed in recent years as higher vehicle prices, rising fuel and insurance costs, and growing competition from Europe and Asia have eroded its once fiercely loyal owner base.

To rekindle interest in the Corvette, especially among younger, affluent buyers who tend to favor imported brands, Chevrolet has completely overhauled the car for the first time since the sixth-generation model was launched in July 2004.

The result, according to chief engineer Tadge Juechter, is "a truly all-new Corvette. There are only two carryover parts from the C6 used in the C7 - the cabin air filter and the rear latch for the removable roof panel."

Chevrolet even has redesigned the Corvette's familiar crossed-flags emblem for the 2014 model.

Other significant upgrades, according to the supplier sources, include a smaller, lighter aluminum V8 engine displacing around 5.5 liters, advanced features such as direction injection, cylinder cutoff and variable valve timing, and a new seven-speed manual transmission for improved fuel economy.

Prices, due to be announced next summer, are expected to range from just under $55,000 for the base model to nearly $120,000 for the top-of-the-line Corvette ZR1.

Chevrolet said dealers will continue to take orders for the current model until December. (Reporting By Paul Lienert in Detroit; Editing by Richard Chang)

The Shabby Nest: An Autumn-Inspired Living Room~

I had the opportunity recently to work on a living room e-design for a dear friend of mine from Massachusetts.? She and her family had recently relocated to Wisconsin, and had purchased a new home which was bigger than the one they had in Massachusetts.

This left her with a fun dilemma (well, fun to me, anyway).? She didn't have enough furniture to fill the new house.? She and her husband often entertain business colleagues, and she wanted to create a living room which would be a great place for conversation and which would truly incorporate who their family is.?? To make sure that the room was a reflection?of their family, we started by picking out some art that reminded them of their home in Massachusetts...a beautiful photograph of the Quabbin Reservoir in the autumn.

She also requested that I incorporate the color red, since she has an open floor plan, and red is a color that she already has in her kitchen and dining room.? Because I was going to use red in the color scheme and the photo we chose showcased the autumn colors of New England, a fall-hued palette seemed like a natural choice.

Pretty golds, browns, reds (of course) and a touch of green make this living room a cozy, comfortable place to be and to entertain.? And the best part, is when I was finished coming up with the plan, I could really see my friend living in the space.? And her resulting email to?me confirmed that this is exactly what she would have designed, if she could have done it herself.? To a designer, there is really no greater compliment than that!

If you have a design dilemma that you'd like help with, I'm your gal.? You can check out my e-design packages here.?

Want to see other e-design moodboards?? Check out these posts...

Out of respect for my paying clients, I do not post e-design sources on my blog.? Thanks for understanding.

If you?re a small business owner, you can use social media networks to establish your company?s presence on the Internet. These tools can help you keep in touch with current customers and help you find new clients. Your business must adapt to the online marketplace to take advantage of the Internet.

How to Connect With Your Audience

If you already have a website for your business, you can improve it by adding a blog. A blog allows your regular visitors to easily see your latest news and updates. Additionally, visitors can use the comment portion of your blog to give you instant feedback. Be sure to save copies of your blog files to an external hard drive. This will help you get your blog running again after a server failure or other technological catastrophe.

Social networks give you another way to directly communicate with your customers. Twitter and other similar networks allow you to strike up a conversation with a customer through a series of short messages. Your customers can use these networks to get help with your products or services.

Many Internet users today have their own Facebook account. Creating a Facebook account for your business gives your customers a new way to reach you. Your Facebook profile can share important information about your company, including contact details and special deals.

The Benefits

Using these tools helps you to establish yourself on the Internet. Today?s Internet users expect their favorite businesses to have an online presence. Many customers want to have the ability to talk to a company representative when they need help with a product. Some consumers will forget about a company that lacks an online presence.

Social networks also provide you with easy ways to advertise your business for free. Through Facebook and Twitter, you can talk to thousands of people at no charge. You can use these tools to tell people more about your business and your story.

Additionally, when you communicate with a regular customer through these networks, your potential customers can see how you publicly handle your business. Through positive online interactions, you can help generate buzz for your company. You may even attract new customers just from responding quickly to your current clients.

Social networking tools can help your small business find a place in the modern business world. Learning how to use these tools effectively will take time, but your company may find new customers due to your efforts.

Ryan to Biden: ?I know you?re under duress to make up for lost ground?

As the vice presidential debate shifted to domestic issues, the vice presidential candidates were asked to weigh in on Medicare.

"They got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, robbing Medicare to pay for Obamacare," Ryan said of his assertion that seniors would lose Medicare access under the president's plan.

Biden continued to interrupt Ryan, attempting to argue with his assertions. "That's not true, more people signed up [for Medicare]," Biden said.

Ryan then addressed the first presidential debate, taking an ironic verbal shot at Biden. "I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground," Ryan said.

"Well, don't take up all the four minutes, then," Biden shot back.

Though for the record, at the time of the exchange, Biden had been speaking for over two minutes longer than Ryan in total debate time.

When it was officially Biden's turn again, he chose to address the debate cameras directly.

"Seniors are not denied choices," Biden said. "All you seniors out there, have you been denied choices?"

First whole genome sequencing of multiple pancreatic cancer patients has been outlined

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Whole genome sequencing -- spelling out all 3 billion letters in the human genome -- "is an obvious and powerful method for advancing our understanding of pancreatic cancer," according to a new study from TGen, Mayo Clinic and Scottsdale Healthcare published October 10.

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) demonstrated that the use of WGS "represents a compelling solution to obtaining detailed molecular information on tumor biopsies in order to provide guidance for therapeutic selection," concluded the study published by the journal PLOS ONE.

Examining three patients, the study spelled out the DNA of normal cells and compared that to the DNA of cells from biopsies of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC), which makes up 95 percent of all pancreatic cancer tumors. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.

Using next-generation sequencing, the study generated an average of 132 billion mappable bases, or data points, for each patient, resulting in the identification of 142 cellular genetic coding events, including mutations, insertions and deletions, and chromosomal copy number variants.

"This study is the first to report whole genome sequencing findings in paired tumor/normal samples collected from (three) separate PAC patients," said the report, which also was compiled with the collaboration of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Arizona State University, and the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials at Scottsdale Healthcare, which is a partnership between TGen and Scottsdale Healthcare.

In all three case studies, the report found multiple potential therapeutic targets, highlighting the need to study the full spectrum of the genome and re-emphasizing the need to develop multiple avenues of therapeutics to match the specific medical challenges of each patient.

"Cancer, and specifically here pancreatic cancer, is a highly complex disease that ultimately will require a variety of treatment methods to control, and ultimately to cure," said Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, TGen's Physician-In-Chief, and Chief Scientific Officer for the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare.

"This study shows that, as we continue to generate more information by sequencing the whole genomes of patients, we will continue to discover -- with ever more confidence -- the specific mechanisms that cause this cancer," said Dr. Von Hoff, one of the study's senior authors and one of the world's leading authorities on pancreatic cancer.

"We are very pleased to be working together with TGen in bringing hope and state of the art therapy to our patients at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center," said Keith Stewart, M.B., Dean of Research at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and the study's other senior author.

In the case of Patient 1, for example, genes previously associated with PAC were identified, including BRCA2, TP53, CDKN2A, MYC, SMAD4 and KRAS. But the study also made new discoveries. "Although BRCA2 mutations have been identified in PAC, the deletion we identify here in exon 10 of BRCA2 has not been previously reported," the study said.

Multiple therapeutics based on these findings were applied to Patient 1, who initially "showed a complete response,'' but developed drug resistance after six months.

"The BRCA2 deletion is likely the driving mutation in this patient as the loss of DNA repair functions permits the occurrence of mutations," the study said. "This finding and association provides evidence of the utility of performing whole genome analysis of patients in order to identify less common mutations that may be relevant for therapeutic selection."

WGS for Patient 2 and Patient 3 also uncovered multiple potential therapeutic targets through the identification of mutations and copy-number changes. In addition, RNA sequencing, or whole transcriptome analysis, of Patient 2 and Patient 3 revealed gene expression data that provided more information about likely affected biological processes.

Cellular pathway analysis of all sequencing data was also performed to identify processes that may be the most heavily impacted by cellular and gene expression alterations.

"As we continue to sequence patients, we will acquire a better understanding of the compendium of events that have a role in the disease, and strengthen our knowledge base for identifying and developing improved therapeutics," said Winnie Liang, Ph.D., Assistant Director of TGen's Collaborative Sequencing Center and one of the co-lead authors of the study.

"This study has demonstrated the feasibility of applying genome sequencing approaches toward eventual personalization and precision of therapy for patients with pancreatic cancer," said Dr. Mitesh Borad, hematologist/oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and co-author of the study. "Current studies are focusing on application of this approach in the clinical setting in a real time fashion."

Co-author Dr. Michael Demeure, Clinical Professor of TGen's Rare Cancer Unit and Scientific Director of the Endocrine and Rare Tumors Program at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare, said, "Whole genome sequencing provides us with the genetic blueprint and knowledge that is needed to crack the complex mysteries surrounding pancreatic cancer. For rare cancers where the data pool is relatively small, the potential for progress is particularly encouraging."

This groundbreaking study -- Genome-wide characterization of pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients using next generation sequencing -- was funded by: the National Foundation for Cancer Research, the Randy Pausch Scholarship Fund, and the Seena Magowitz Foundation. Additional support was provided by the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and supercomputing resources funded by the National Institutes of Health.

"This study represents a major step forward in the quest to find a cure for this cancer, which took the life of my mother, Seena. We are working harder than ever with TGen and others to continue this fight," said Roger Magowitz, President and co-founder of the Seena Magowitz Foundation.

"Whole genome sequencing is a new approach toward finding better treatments and to making these treatments available to cancer patients who need them now. We cannot emphasize enough the need for this kind of research," said Franklin C. Salisbury Jr., President of the NFCR.

Toyota to recall 7.4 million vehicles over power window glitch

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp said it would recall more than 7.4 million vehicles worldwide as a faulty power window switch was a potential fire hazard, the latest in a series of setbacks that have dented the reputation of Japan's biggest automaker.

The voluntary move is the biggest single recall since Ford pulled 8 million vehicles off the road in 1996 to replace defective ignition switches that could have caused engine fires.

Toyota has battled its way back from multiple difficulties since 2008, including a series of recalls involving more than 10 million of its vehicles in 2009-11, and crippled supply chains from last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan and floods in Thailand. It posted its biggest quarterly operating profit in four years in April-June.

The firm regained its crown as the world's best-selling automaker in the first half year and expects to sell 9.76 million cars and light trucks globally this year, including the Daihatsu and Hino brands.

More recently, though, Toyota - and other Japanese brands - have seen sales plummet in China, the world's biggest autos market, as a result of protests in a simmering Sino-Japanese territorial dispute. Toyota said on Tuesday that its China sales fell 48.9 percent year-on-year in September. Sales in China account for about 12 percent of its total.

QUICK FIX

The recall, intended to fix a malfunctioning power window switch on the driver's side, primarily affects cars in the United States, China and Europe.

Toyota's main rivals in the U.S. include Ford and General Motors Co , while in China they include Volkswagen AG , Hyundai Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co Ltd , and in Europe, Hyundai and Nissan.

The recall will include some Yaris and Corolla models, with repairs taking about 40 minutes, the company said.

"The process to repair (the power window switch) is not an extensive one," spokeswoman Monika Saito said, adding that it would involve putting heat-resistant grease on the switches, or exchanging them.

Toyota declined to say how much the recall would cost, or what impact it may have on future earnings.

Koichi Sugimoto, senior analyst at BNP Paribas Securities in Tokyo, estimated the recall could cost at least 10 billion yen ($128 million).

"Of course, 7 million vehicles is a huge number, but it's probably not going to be like last time when customers in the United States avoided buying Toyota cars. This sounds like a completely different scale from then," he said.

GLOBAL SCALE

The recall will include 2.47 million vehicles in the United States, 1.4 million in China and 1.39 million in Europe, the company said.

No accidents, injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the problem, though there is a possibility the malfunctioning switches could emit smoke, Saito said. Toyota's U.S. news release said the problem could lead to fire if commercially available lubricants were used on the switch.

Toyota will take in for repair about 459,300 vehicles in Japan, including the Vitz model, produced between 2006 and 2008.

The firm is also recalling 650,000 vehicles in Australia and Asia, 490,000 in the Near and Middle East, 240,000 in Canada and 330,000 elsewhere, said Shino Yamada, another spokeswoman for Toyota.

The vehicles recalled outside Japan include some models of the Yaris, Vios, Corolla, Matrix, Auris, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia, xB and xD produced between 2005 and 2010.

The first time the problem was reported was in September 2008 in the United States, Saito said.

Shares in Toyota ended down 1.9 percent, in line with the broader Nikkei index <.n225>.

Romney vs Obama vs debate: Was the president drugged by a right-wing doctor?

Sunday, debate guru Brett O'Donnell reviewed President Obama's debate performance on Power Play with Chris Wallace. O'Donnell noted that during the debate the president seemed strangely unfocused, even oblique, and exhibited some genuinely bizarre body language. O'Donnell's trained eye noted Obama's avoidance went further than merely keeping his head down.

O'Donnell pointed out that standing behind a podium which "canted right," Obama deviated from this natural angle by physically turning his entire body to the left. Visually, Obama appeared reluctant to face the moderator, Jim Lehrer, the cameras or Mitt Romney. The result was Obama appeared to show what many would describe as a "cold shoulder" to the debate process.

While O'Donnell used soft terms such as "appeared to lack focus" or "distracted," others are suggesting perhaps President Obama was on drugs or medication. Immediately following the debate, the New York Times described Obama as "President Prozac."

A Lubbock, Texas news article, remarked that "Obama appeared to be fatigued and detached" and posited that a combination of both arrogance and medication or drugs had "brought him down." Saturday, an Obama apologist inferred the right-wing had sabotaged the president, asking, "Were medication errors involved in Obama's debate performance? Is a right-leaning MD behind the debacle, maybe?"

Obama has an admitted history of drug abuse and given his bewildering debate performance, speculation may not be so far-fetched; although, any suggestion that Obama might actually employ a right-wing physician should probably be pooh-poohed. Regarding the questions about whether Obama was "simply exhausted" or had "taken some medications or drugs in an attempt to improve his concentration, to boost his confidence, and possibly even to calm his nerves," it's true,"we will probably never know."

In the past, Democrats quickly claimed that Representative Hank Johnson was a victim of medication when he expressed his fears that "Guam would tip over from soldiers' extra weight," if 8000 Marines and their families moved to the island. At this time, neither drugs nor prescription medication has been mentioned by the Obama team as a reason that Mitt Romney reduced Obama to what some consider "mince-meat" in the debate.

While conservatives were pointing to Jim Lehrer's warning, "Mr. President, your time is up," as prophetic, critics were quick to place the blame on Lehrer, who is perhaps the most well-seasoned debate moderator known. They are claiming his hands-off approach failed to allow Obama to shine. To the contrary, the transcript of the debate spotlights several instances when Lehrer attempted to cue the president on his message, even to the point of providing him with actual phrases that Obama could use.

For instance, Lehrer clearly cued the president by saying, "Mr. President, you're saying in order to get it, the job done, it's got to be balanced." Obama responded, "If we're serious, we've got to take a balanced, responsible approach." In this case, Obama basically repeated Lehrer's helpful cue and then continued to expand upon it somewhat.

From this National Public Radio excerpt, it's readily apparent that though Lehrer did try handily to help Obama stay on track; he wasn't always successful. This example shows how Obama failed to focus and missed an opportunity that Lehrer tried so hard to provide him. Instead, Obama merely repeated what Lehrer said and allowed his opportunity to move to Romney:

"Mr. Lehrer: Mr. President.

President Obama: Well, we've had this discussion before.

Mr. Lehrer: No, about the idea that in order to reduce the deficit there has to be revenue in addition to cuts.

President Obama: There has to be revenue in addition to cuts. Now, Governor Romney has ruled out revenue. He's, he's ruled out revenue."

Obviously, there are no flattering reasons to explain why Obama was soundly trounced. Even for someone who is reaching desperately for a reason to excuse Obama's inability to defend his leadership during his term or to promote his leadership going forward, an evil right-wing doctor is quite a stretch. Drugs, either illegal or medicinal, aren't so easily dismissed.

Comedy star Bill Maher was one of the dismayed Obama donors who suggested the president was, indeed, on drugs, saying with despair, ?He looked tired. He had trouble getting his answers out. It looked like he took my million and spent it all on weed.?

In the meantime, the Obama team is ironically looking to an unlikely savior, Joe Biden, to rescue Obama in this week's debate against his GOP rival, Paul Ryan. Biden is gaffe-prone and not only called "jobs" a three-letter word, he recently claimed the middle class has been "buried" for the past four years." Overnight the presidential debates, once considered almost an after-thought that are seldom political game-changers, have morphed into must-see political events.

(AP) ? Small teams of U.S. special operations forces arrived at American embassies throughout North Africa to set up a new counterterrorist network months before militants killed the U.S. ambassador in Libya. But officials say the network was too new to stop the Benghazi attack.

The White House approved the plan a year ago, worried about a spread of al-Qaida after the killing of Osama bin Laden. But it moved slowly in order to win approval from U.S. ambassadors, intelligence and military chiefs and local governments. That's according to officials who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the strategy publicly.

With U.S. elections nearing, Republicans say the White House failed to react aggressively to new al-Qaida threats before the attack and has failed to strike back quickly enough.

If you always type in long text strings, lighten your typing load with AutoCorrect! Type your text string, for example,? ?a 501(c)3 organization.? Select it, then click on the File tab (or Office button) and Options (or Word Options). In the Proofing category, choose the first button, AutoCorrect. Type the shortcut you want to use going forward, like ?501-?. Now, just type 501-, and the longer phrase will appear. If you ever want to use 501- by itself, after the longer text string appears, just hit backspace. This will not prevent you from typing only 501.

Against Romantic Sensitivity | Psychology Today

?When two people are under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusive, and most transient of passions, they are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal, and exhausting condition continuously until death do them part.? George Bernard Shaw

Can we be too romantically sensitive? Is it worthwhile achieving the heights of love only to crash down, or is it better to maintain a steady level of low sensitivity? I shall examine these issues by distinguishing two types of sensitivity and considering the real case of Carol.

The story of Carol

?To be loved is a strength. To love is a weakness.? Zsa Zsa Gabor

Carol is a beautiful, intelligent and very sensitive woman who has been married for 30 years to her high-school sweetheart. She describes her husband as an excellent human being?he loves and adores her and she loves and respects him. They are each other's best friend. She feels very satisfied with her marriage and considers her love to be profound, though it is on the borderline between companionate and passionate love. Carol has a negative attitude toward being madly in love and claims that ?Being madly in love is nothing; it is of no value as it is often so harmful. I would rather remain steadily at an average low level of passionate love and not seek a madly exciting relationship that is bound to end and to generate frustration and depression.? Carol wishes to avoid the pitfalls of a highly sensitive romantic relationship that could end in either or both partners being badly hurt. The good companionable love that she has now is good enough for her.

Laura Kipnis argues that "taking an occasional walk on the wild side while still wholeheartedly pledged to a monogamous relationship isn?t an earthshaking contradiction." Carol does not see any value in such an occasional walk and prefers the sweat of occasional joggings over the sweat of occasional sex, as jogging involves no tears and no bad blood.

In order to evaluate Carol?s attitude, we should first analyze the nature of emotional sensitivity.

Emotional sensitivity

?Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life.? Brooke Shields, during an interview to become spokesperson for a federal anti-smoking campaign

Sensitivity, in the sense discussed here, may be characterized as a response to our physical or mental environment; it is the tendency to have a strong reaction toward romantic circumstances. Strong romantic sensitivity implies that you are quick to notice and be affected by romantic cues. Romantically sensitive people are tender and sympathetic toward other people. Though such people may be easily excited, they might not find it easy to fall profoundly in love, as such love demands a combination of many virtues that are rare to find. There are people who may not find an intense, genuine, profound love throughout their whole life.

In comparison to people with lower emotional sensitivity, those with higher sensitivity perceive the events around them as more significant. Their environment is replete with many meaningful events. Such people do not need to seek emotionally charged situations, as they react strongly to everyday situations. People of low emotional sensitivity have to look for unique events, or even create such events (for example, a mountain-climbing expedition), in order to enjoy the sensation of a significant event.

People of high emotional sensitivity are typically more sensitive to both negative and positive situations; accordingly, their sadness and happiness are more intense. Those who become extremely overjoyed when good things happen are more likely to experience an equally strong negative impact when bad things happen.

Like other emotions, love is characterized by a lack of indifference. Indifference expresses the absence of normative preference and hence the absence of emotional sensitivity. Therefore, people in love prefer to be hurt by the beloved rather than be treated indifferently. As Jose Ortega y Gasset indicates in his book On Love, the person in love "prefers the anguish which her beloved causes her to painless indifference." Similarly, the saying goes that it is better to break someone's heart than to do nothing with it. In her song, "A second-hand love," Connie Francis says, that "I'd rather have this kind of (second-hand) love than not see you at all."

Indifference is a shield we use to protect ourselves against external negative impacts. Hence, people sometimes prefer to lower their sensitivity levels in order to prevent themselves from being hurt. However, a significant reduction in emotional sensitivity may be harmful, as emotions have an important function in our survival.

A person who is totally without emotional sensitivity has no parameters and no warning system, no immediate evaluative guidelines that enable him to determine relevance and importance. In a world without emotions, Jose Antonio Jauregui argues, a young man, when meeting a young woman, may be able to see her, touch her, and think to himself: ?This is someone with whom I could get along well.? However, without emotions, the young man will not be excited by her presence and will not be attracted to her. A lack of all emotional sensitivity would render us inhuman.

Emotional sensitivity plays an important role in our lives and we should not attempt to reduce, block or eradicate it, but we can attempt to moderate its negative impact. Just as it is not advisable to cut off your head to get rid of a headache, so it is not advisable to eliminate your sensitivity and desires in an attempt to get rid of the pain these cause you.

Two types of sensitivity

?I have been poor and I have been rich, and rich is better.? Bessie Smith

Two levels of sensitivities may be discerned: (1) sensitivity as a reaction to a given (external or internal) event, and (2) sensitivity to your own reaction, in the sense of giving it more or less weight.

You may, for instance, be very sensitive to insults: the moment you are insulted, you becomes extremely upset. The weight that you give to this sensitivity might enrage and distress you and after each incident, your anger might take a long time to subside. However, you can decide to work at giving lesser weight to such insults and not to pay much attention to them. Likewise, you may be very sensitive to romantic possibilities and get extremely excited when such possibilities arise. However, since you are married, you can decide to give less weight to such forbidden circumstances and stop yourself from thinking about them. Sensitivity-1 is the immediate spontaneous sensitivity to a given event in the short term; sensitivity-2 is the manner in which we deal with sensitivity-1.

An example of high intensity of both types of sensitivity is the case of Abel Kiviat, the 1,500m silver medalist in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm who had the race until Arnold Jackson ?came from nowhere? to beat him by a mere one-tenth of a second. About 70 years later, at age 91, Kiviat admitted in an interview: ?I wake up sometimes and say, ?What the heck happened to me?? It?s like a nightmare.? Despite winning a most respectable place that ranked him second in the world, Kiviat was very sad in his initial spontaneous reaction (sensitivity-1), and throughout his life he gave tremendous weight to the experience of losing the gold medal (sensitivity-2).

A romantic example of high intensity of both types of sensitivity is intense love at first sight, which continues to be intense for a long time. An example of low intensity of both types is the case of two people who are not in love with each other and are having mechanistic sex, which has no significance for their future happiness.

Managing our sensitivities

?I like restraint, if it doesn't go too far.? Mae West

We can manage both types of sensitivities in different ways. Managing sensitivity-1, which is to a greater extent a function of our personal makeup, is typically the result of a slow process of habituation (drifting), and while managing sensitivity-2 is more up to us and can include, for instance, the use of escape devices, such as being intensely involved in other activities.

Customers come first when it comes to network marketing. Customer satisfaction is directly linked to the success of your business. Listen to your customers at least 80 percent of the time; the rest of the time you can talk.

Help from Internet sources like blogs and network marketing forums can be a smart way to keep yourself up-to-date and informed about the industry. These forums put you in contact with experts that are more than happy to share experiences, tips and wisdom for you to learn. While it is important to have a solid operational plan as the foundation for your business, it is equally important to include contingency plans that allow some degree of flexibility. The value should lead when it comes to marketing. Right from the start, make clear what you are offering and its benefits. You want to make money and fulfill your own self interest. Keep in mind that everyone has similar goals too. What problems do your products solve? How can you improve the lives of your customers? Keep customers focused on the enduring value of your products.

Create a monthly spending budget for your network marketing business. You need to figure out how much money you can safely afford to put into a business in order to make sure it runs smoothly. Understand that being too stingy with your budget initially will hinder the progress of your business.

You need to be an expert on the products you sell. Being passionate about the product will show when you are marketing it to others. If you believe in what you are marketing, you will be more convincing to potential recruits. Having a high level of expertise in your products will also enable you to give thorough and genuine reviews that people will trust.

Network marketing is just one of the various ways big corporations discover their audience by using your particular network. Use this information to get your piece of the network marketing profits.
